Precautions
SEAL IT. NO EXCUSES. This is the #1 rule. Unglazed = slightly porous. A top-quality penetrating sealer applied after grouting is mandatory. Re-seal periodically – think yearly in busy showers, every 2-3 years elsewhere. Hammer this home with clients. Failure means stains, water damage, heartache.
Installation is Pro-Only: DIYers need not apply. Requires absolute flatness, rigid substrate, and installers who know natural stone or high-variation tile. One wrong move = costly mess.
Variation is the Point: Customers must understand and want the color shifts, texture differences, and slight size variations. It's the charm! Mix boxes during install. Rejecting tiles for "imperfections" misses the point.
Grout Matters: Use high-quality, non-sanded or very fine-sanded grout. Test colors first! Texture means grout cleanup needs extra care – residue shows.
Texture = Traction: It's not glass-smooth. That texture gives grip and depth, but manage expectations.
Efflorescence Potential: Natural salts might surface as a white haze later, especially early on. Usually cleans off; good sealing/venting helps prevent it.
Handle with Kid Gloves: Individual mosaic pieces can chip if bashed around pre-install.
