How zellige tiles are made
From hard clay to beautiful colored zellige tiles, find out the handmade ancestral traditions of making moroccan zellige tiles in AST.
STEP 1
Choose a good quality clay and soak the clay in water until it reaches a soft texture. Skilled masters will use the warmth of their palms to slowly knead the clay.
STEP 2
When the clay is moderately soft and hard, the masters will put it in the mold to shape it.The shape of the zellige mosaic is also made in this way.
STEP 3
The master will cut off the excess parts of the clay by hand.
STEP 4
In order to make the finished tile more regular, the master will trim the edges by hand.
STEP 5
After the clay is shaped, molded and flattened, it is kept and stored in a cool dry place.
STEP 6
Use sunlight to slowly dry the tile embryo until it is completely dry.
STEP 7
The most experienced masters will prepare the color formula according to their experience.
STEP 8
The craftsman will glaze each tile by hand one by one.
STEP 9
The glazed tiles are placed piece by piece on the shelf, waiting to be pushed into the kiln for firing.
STEP 10
In this way, a beautiful piece of zellige was born.
